I remember my friend Steve Robinson and I going to see this in 1980 when it hit theaters. Hard to believe it was 28 years ago. Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite actors and he was great in this film. Considered a classic in the horror genre... I just think it's one of the best horror films ever made. They relied more on tension, fear, and suspense than gore. Fear is what drives a horror movie. Music, mood, play an important role as well. However, if it doesn't grab that part of your mind where you have all your hidden fears safely tucked away, then it's not doing it's job! The Shining is a great movie because of several elements, more importantly, it's great because it takes you on a tension filled ride that seems believable. There's a clip of the "Here's Johnny" scene at the end of this post. Like any good horror film, there has to be comic relief, and this scene at the end satisfies that need as well. I know people say that the movie isn't like the book... who cares! Read a book and enjoy it for what it delivers. Watch a movie based on its content and enjoy it for what it is... The Shining is probably my #1 favorite horror movie of all time because all the elements of great horror are in this movie. If you've never seen it, you should give it a watch. LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie Frank. Probably Jack's best one, I think anyway. I know this is one of your faves, mine too. He plays such a good psycho. Noone else could fit the role like he does. Probably why the remake with Rebecca Demornay (spelling?) wasn't very good. Like I always say when they make a sucky remake, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Lol!
The remake was really lame... The guy from Wings played Nicholson's role and just didn't have what it takes as an actor to pull it off!
