January 23rd is the date for the release of the new movie, Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans (2009). I really enjoyed the first two movies and look forward to this release. It is a prequel set in the Dark Ages and shows the beginning of the war between the vampires and the werewolves. Kate Beckinsale, and Scott Speedman were in the first two but will not be in this one. The newcomer is Rhona Mitra who has appeared in Skinwalkers (2006), The Number 23 (2007), Shooter (2007), and Doomsday (2008). I've seen all but Doomsday and I think she is a good actress. Michael Sheen returns as Lucian, the leader of the werewolves and Bill Nighy (played Davy Jones in the last two Pirates of the Caribbean movies) resumes his role as Viktor the leader of the vampires. The movie trailer looks great. Check it out at the end of this post.
The original Underworld(2003) was one of the best vampire/werewolf movies I have ever seen. The whole idea of vampires and werewolves waring because at one time the werewolves were slaves to the vampires was unique and so interesting. Beckinsale played a vampire who falls in love with the Speedman character who played a werewolf. There are some interesting twist within the movie to bring everything together and make for one very entertaining movie. If you haven't seen it, you really should!
Underworld: Evolution (2006) recapped some of the first movie by answering some questions from it. Basically, this one has Beckinsale and Speedman fighting for their lives to protect each other from the werewolves and the vampires. It's just an interesting twist to the vampire/werewolf genre that I found to be so good. The whole series has been well made and along with the Blade movies, have really brought the vampire genre back in the headlines... where in my opinion, it should always be! Check out the trailer below and enter the underworld!
